Lack of facilities

Our biggest concern is on the Navajo Nation is the lack of adequate jails and bed spaces.  With over 30,000 plus arrests each year, we rarely only house 103 individuals that are sentenced by our courts.  Our detention centers were built over twenty years ago and have far out lived their life expectancy.  The option would be to replace these facilities with new and permanent structures that meet all of ADA, ACA and other Uniform Building Code standards.

Due to lack funds we are facing the possibility of using modular structures.  The cost to renovate existing detention facilities is estimated at $11 million dollars.[i]
